Office Hours : Tentatively Tuesday 4th period, Wednesday 3rd period, Friday 4th period. Please come early in the period or let me know to expect you later. See my schedule for updates. You can also see me by appointment any weekday except Thursday.

Text: Ellis and Gulick, Calculus with Analytic Geometry (5th edition)

Syllabus: chapters 11-15 of the text (with some omissions)

Course Format: Lectures Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday; quizzes and/or problem-discussion on Friday. There may deviations from this schedule because of holidays, exams, etc.

Homework: Homework will be assigned daily and is due by the next class, but I will not collect it. Instead, on some Fridays there will be quizzes on the homework. Whether there will be a quiz on a particular Friday is a surprise.

Click here for the homework for the entire semester.

Don't wait till Thursday to start doing the homework that was due Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. There will be far too much homework for you to do in one night, and not enough time to see me in office hours with your questions.

Workload: Between going over your notes, reading the book, and doing homework, you should expect to have to put in about eight hours of work outside of class per week. Some weeks the workload may seem lighter; other weeks heavier. In weeks where the workload seems lighter, either start reading ahead and doing homework early, or get ahead in another class, so that if the workload is heavier the next week you don't fall behind.

Exams: Your final grade will be determined by

For more information, see Quizzes, Exams, and Grades .

I reserve the right to adjust the percentages above in individual cases if I feel that circumstances warrant.

Dates for exams: In-class midterms are tentatively scheduled for Friday Sept. 18, Wed. Oct. 14, and Tues Nov. 10. The final exam will be Tuesday Dec. 15 starting at 12:30 p.m., in this room.

Attendance bonus: If your attendance is good enough, I will drop your worst quiz. To qualify for this drop, you have to have no more than two absences for the whole semester. If you have more than two absences, but can document that ALL of these were for valid reasons, such as illness, I'll excuse your absences and drop your worst quiz. If you have more than two absences, and ANY of them is unexcused, I won't drop a quiz. Do not mistakenly think you have two ``free'' absences! Example: Early in the semester you miss a class to study for an exam in another class, or to go home to see your family. Later in the semester an illness or family emergency requires you to miss two more classes. Because you now have three absences, one of which is unexcused, you are ineligible to drop a quiz.

Being late counts as being absent. (I'll usually start taking attendance before the bell rings. ``Late'' means you enter the room after the bell rings or after I'm done taking attendance, whichever comes later.)

If you miss a quiz, it counts as a 0. (But this 0 is eligible for your dropped quiz if your attendance is good enough.)
