Each homework-assignment page will have a "last update" line like the one above near the top of the page, so that you can easily tell whether there have been changes since the last time you looked.
Due-date: Wednesday, 9/5/18.
You are required to do all of the problems below. You will not be required to hand them all in. I have indicated below which ones you do have to hand in on the due-date. Don't make the mistake of thinking that I'm collecting only the problems I think are important.
The "due date" above is the date that your written-up problems should be handed in, but don't wait to get started on the assignment. You should always get started on problems as soon as we cover the relevant material in class.
- A: Rosenlicht Chap. I/ 4ad, 5–8. Of these, hand in only 5a, 7bce.
- B: Click here for non-book problems. Of these, hand in only B2(b), B3, B5(a). For B3, I'm not requiring formal proofs of your answers, but do at least draw a picture or pictures in \({\bf R}^2\) to indicate why the answers are what you say they are.
- C: For review, read the handouts "Sets and Functions" and "Difference Between Inverse Functions and Inverse Images" posted on the Miscellaneous Handouts page. You should be able to do this quickly, since we've covered in class almost all of what's in these handouts. If you are not familiar with equivalence relations, you should also read the handout "Equivalence Relations".
